You know that frantic feeling when Halloween is around the corner and you need something quick, fun, and actually edible for the kids? I totally get it! Last year, Amy's class Halloween party snuck up on me (why do these things always seem to happen?), and I needed something festive that wouldn't take all afternoon. That's when I came up with these mini mummy pizzas, and honestly, they were such a hit that Bradley asked if we could make them for regular dinner nights too!

These adorable little pizzas are exactly what you need when you want Halloween fun without the hassle. With just four simple ingredients and fifteen minutes from start to finish, you've got a snack that looks impressive but couldn't be easier to make. The best part? Kids absolutely love helping wrap the cheese strips around like bandages, and watching their little mummy faces come to life in the oven is pretty magical.

Whether you're planning a Halloween party, need a quick after-school snack, or want something special for dinner on October 31st, these mummy pizzas are the answer. They're also a great way to sneak in some protein and whole grains while keeping things festive and fun. Why You'll Love These Mini Mummy Pizzas

  • Super quick to make – Ready in just 15 minutes from start to finish, perfect for busy weeknights or last-minute party prep
  • Kid-friendly fun – Children love helping wrap the cheese "bandages" and placing the olive eyes
  • Only four ingredients – English muffins, pizza sauce, string cheese, and olives are all you need
  • Healthier Halloween option – Actual food with protein and whole grains, not just candy and sugar
  • Budget-friendly – Uses simple pantry staples you probably already have at home
  • Customizable – Easy to adapt for different dietary needs or preferences

Ingredients For Your Mummy Pizzas

  • 2 English muffins (split in half to create 4 mini pizzas)
  • ¼ cup pizza sauce (I use regular marinara sauce most of the time)
  • 2-3 string cheese sticks (the key ingredient for those bandage wrappings!)
  • 8 olive slices (black olives work best for spooky eyes)

Ingredient Notes From My Kitchen

The English muffins are my go-to base because they're sturdy, affordable, and most families have them around. I usually buy the whole wheat version to sneak in some extra nutrition, but regular white muffins work just as well. Amy actually prefers the white ones because she says they taste sweeter!

For the pizza sauce, I keep it simple with whatever I have in the pantry. Sometimes it's marinara, sometimes it's a basic tomato sauce. John likes to add a pinch of Italian seasoning to his, but that's totally optional. The kids don't notice the difference either way.

String cheese is where the magic happens! Those pull-apart cheese sticks are perfect because they naturally separate into thin strips that look just like mummy bandages. I learned this trick when Bradley was little and obsessed with pulling his string cheese into the tiniest possible strips. Who knew that annoying habit would inspire a recipe?

The olives can be swapped if your kids aren't fans. I've used small pepperoni circles, capers (for adventurous eaters), or even small cherry tomato slices cut in half. Amy went through a phase where she insisted on using raisins for eyes, which was... interesting. They worked, but I wouldn't recommend it!

How To Make Your Mummy Pizzas

  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C (430°F) or 200°C fan-forced. Getting that oven nice and hot ensures your cheese melts perfectly and your muffins get a little crispy on the edges.
  1. Slice the English muffins in half and lightly toast them. This step is optional, but I always do it! Toasting gives the muffins better flavor and prevents them from getting soggy from the pizza sauce. Just pop them in the toaster for a minute or stick them under the broiler for 30 seconds.
  1. Spread pizza sauce on the cut side of each muffin half. Don't go overboard here! About a tablespoon per muffin is plenty. Too much sauce makes everything slide around, and trust me, I learned that the messy way when Amy's entire mummy face slipped off during our first attempt.

  1. Pull apart your string cheese to form long, thin cheese strips. This is where kids can really help! Show them how to gently pull the cheese into strips about the thickness of shoelaces. We usually get 4-5 strips per cheese stick, depending on how patient we're feeling.
  1. Lay the cheese strips across the pizza sauce to create the mummy wrapping effect. Start at the bottom and work your way up, leaving a gap near the top for the eyes. Let the strips overlap and crisscross randomly – mummies aren't perfect, and neither should these be! Pinch off any cheese that hangs over the edges.
  1. Place two olive slices in the gap you left for the mummy's eyes. Press them gently into the sauce so they stick. Bradley likes to make some of his mummies look surprised by placing the eyes really far apart, which makes us all laugh.
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 5-10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and slightly golden. Keep an eye on them after the 5-minute mark! They can go from perfectly melted to overly brown pretty quickly.
  1. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. This is the hardest part because they smell amazing and everyone wants to dig in immediately! Give them 2-3 minutes to cool so the cheese isn't lava-hot. Trust me, burned tongues are not fun on Halloween night.

Storage and Reheating Your Mummy Pizzas

These mini pizzas are definitely best eaten fresh from the oven when the cheese is all melty and gooey. However, life gets busy, and sometimes you need to make things ahead!

Storing assembled but unbaked pizzas: You can prep these up to 24 hours in advance. Just assemble them completely, cover tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. When you're ready to bake, pop them straight into the preheated oven and add maybe an extra minute or two to the cooking time since they're starting cold.

Storing baked leftovers: If you have any leftover baked mummy pizzas (which rarely happens in our house!), store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. They lose some of their crispy texture, but they're still tasty.

Reheating instructions: The oven or toaster oven works best for reheating. Put them in at 180°C (350°F) for about 5 minutes until warmed through. The microwave works in a pinch (30-45 seconds), but the muffins can get a bit chewy.

Freezing option: I've successfully frozen these! Assemble them completely but don't bake. Place on a baking sheet and freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. They'll keep for up to 2 months. Bake directly from frozen, adding 2-3 extra minutes to the cooking time.

Tips and Variations For Your Mummy Pizza Recipe

Make them dairy-free: Use vegan cheese strips or get creative with thin strips of zucchini or yellow squash for the bandages. I tried this when Amy's friend with a dairy allergy came over, and it worked surprisingly well! You could also use thin strips of deli turkey or chicken.

Different base options: Don't limit yourself to English muffins. We've made these on mini bagels (Bradley's favorite), crumpets (when I'm feeling fancy), mini pita bread, and even flour tortillas cut into circles. Each base gives you a slightly different texture and taste.

Spice it up: For older kids or adults, add some red pepper flakes to the pizza sauce or use a spicier marinara. John likes to sprinkle a tiny bit of garlic powder on his before baking.

Add toppings under the cheese: Before you wrap your mummy, add some tiny pepperoni pieces, diced bell peppers, or mushrooms to the sauce. Just keep them small so the cheese strips still stick properly.

Make them vegetarian or loaded: Spread some pesto instead of pizza sauce for a different flavor profile. Or add a sprinkle of Italian herbs and some diced tomatoes before the cheese goes on.

Create different expressions: Use different eye placements to give your mummies personality! Wide-apart eyes look surprised, close-together eyes look worried, and one eye higher than the other looks silly. Amy has turned this into an art form, giving each mummy its own character.

Serve with dipping sauce: Set out some extra pizza sauce, ranch dressing, or marinara on the side for dipping. It makes these feel like even more of a special treat.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mummy Pizzas

Can I make these mummy pizzas ahead of time?

Yes! Assemble them up to 24 hours in advance, cover with plastic wrap, refrigerate, and bake when ready to serve.

What can I use instead of English muffins?

Try mini pizza bases, crumpets, mini pita bread, or even bagel halves as alternative bases.

How do I prevent the cheese from sliding off?

Lightly toast the English muffins first and let the pizza sauce cool slightly before adding the cheese strips. This helps them stick better.

Can I freeze leftover mummy pizzas?

Yes! Freeze assembled (unbaked) pizzas on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding 2-3 extra minutes to cooking time.

Wrap Up Your Mummy Pizza Fun

These mini mummy pizzas have become a Halloween tradition in our house, right up there with carving pumpkins and trying on costumes three weeks early. What started as a last-minute party solution has turned into something my kids request every October.

The best part isn't just how easy they are to make or how cute they look on the plate. It's watching Amy carefully arrange the cheese strips just so, or hearing Bradley laugh when one of his mummies comes out looking goofy. It's having John sneak an extra one off the cooling rack when he thinks I'm not looking. These simple little pizzas create moments and memories, and that's really what cooking at home is all about.

So go ahead and give these mummy pizzas a try! Whether you're making them for a classroom party, a family Halloween dinner, or just a fun afternoon snack, I think you're going to love how simple and adorable they are. Don't forget to save this recipe to Pinterest so you can find it again next October – or honestly, any time you want to make kids smile!
